  • Kat Von D and her Sensuous Smells Sinner and Saint

    Khalid
    6 Nov 2009 | 3:39 pm
No tattoo aficionado can avoid knowing of Kat Von D. She is LA’s best known female tattoo artist and persona. She has been instrumental in the shift in attitude towards women and tattoos. In fact, I credit her with the huge societal ground shift which has seen professional women choose to have tattoos to adorn their bodies and enhance their sexy charisma, their power and their talents. If I have any criticism it is only that tattoos have now become so popular that the trend buckers among us are going to start soon to choose to go as blank canvasses just to be different… Why do I say that?
  • Rescue Ink

    31 Oct 2009 | 7:41 pm
Ever heard of Rescue Ink? Well, you should have (no, neither had we) because they are the epitome of inspirational and just plain fantastic human beings. I’ll tell you why… Rescue Ink is a group of people – well, men, for the most part -  almost all heavily tattooed, who work out of Long Island, NY to rescue animals from abusers. Their motto is: “Abusers are losers”. In their own words from their own website, they are: “a bunch of tattooed, motorcycle-riding tough guys who have joined together to fight animal cruelty, educate abusers and help resolve situations other…

    29 Oct 2009 | 7:38 pm
Davina McCall was born in 1967 in London. The world was never going to be the same. The wild child product of a messily broken marriage, she suffered anorexia and went a bit off the rails in her twenties, which was to be expected. However, during those days of drug induced hazes, she still managed to sing at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, work as a nightclub hostess in London and date Eric Clapton. Yes. Eric Clapton. Love her yet? In fact it was Clapton who put her on the road to recovery, despite her mother who died years later. Davina’s comment on the matter? “We hadn’t really…

    Khalid
    27 Oct 2009 | 7:22 pm
The last weekend of September 2009 was a memorable one for East London. There were hundreds of tattoo and body artists from all over the globe attending and performing their trade from traditional Nordic facial tattoos applied with a chisel and hammer to heart-stopping full body designs ranging from Eastern mystic creatures to science fiction characters and more. The Convention is well known for its wide variety of entertainment from exhibitions, artistic events and live rock bands to burlesque performers from around the world. The food stalls are bewildering in their variety and mouth…

Wim Delvoye is a Belgian conceptual artist known for hi rather unconventional endeavours. Born in 1965, he is a Dutchman and lives in Ghent. Among the weirdest of his projects is Wim Delvoye’s Art Farm in China. There, he has been tattooing pigs since the 1990s. Why China? Well, my guess would be that it is because there are fewer regulations regarding animal welfare out there than in most parts of the Western world. In 2005 Wim was joined by artist Danny Devos who spent several months at the farm, reorganizing, managing and rebuilding. Danny Devos is a vegetarian, it appears. The pigs are…

  • Bush Pilot Ink: Piper PA-18 Super Cub Tattoo

    Icarus
    1 Nov 2009 | 12:40 pm
One of the best uses of aviation is the supply and support of camps and settlements where traditional “over-road” travel isn’t possible due to distance, terrain, or weather conditions.  The hard conditions faced in flying such missions leads to a breed of pilots who are as battle hardened and devoted to their flying skill as [...]
  • First Solo Flight Forever: Student Pilot Tattoo

    31 Oct 2009 | 8:31 am
Some people snip their shirt-tail off and pin it to the wall for their first solo, others (like at my flight school) were traditionally thrown by their fellow pilots into the nearby Duck Pond after doing their three stop-and-goes aloft by themselves… but some, like the subject of our tattoo feature today, choose to commemorate [...]

I completely realize that we have featured this fantastic black and gray back tattoo honoring famous aviatrix Amelia Earhart before, but in honor of the opening weekend of the movie Amelia by Mira Nair and featuring Hilary Swank, we decided to bring it back!  It was an early post of ours and perhaps not everyone [...]

    5 Oct 2009 | 10:45 pm
I will admit that when I first saw this tattoo, I thought the aircraft pictured was a North American AT-6 Texan… one of the more common trainers of WWII vintage.  However, as I reviewed it this past week as I was preparing posts, I realized it was far more rare than an AT-6… this tattoo [...]

  • Book Review: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

    1 Nov 2009 | 7:29 am
"Everyone has secrets," she replied neutrally. "It's just a matter of finding out what they are." I love a good mystery, and when I saw that this particular mystery was getting great reviews, I decided I had to read it. Granted, the word "tattoo" in the title is what caught my attention in the first place, but the reference to body ink is actually very insignificant except that the girl it refers to is one of the main characters in the book, Lisbeth Salandar. But Lisbeth Salandar will be of particular interest to my readers because she's "one of us" and she gets misjudged everywhere she goes.

  • Backscatter: Controversial New Security X-Ray Sees All

    24 Oct 2009 | 6:25 pm
Whole Body Imaging is now being implemented at security checks in a handful of International airports around the world. Instead of walking through a metal detector, passengers are being directed through a powerful x-ray machine which does a virtual "strip search," allowing the screeners to see hidden weapons and dangerous objects even if they're not made of metal. But the images produced by the scanners have been the source of much controversy. Find out whether your private body piercings are safe from detection and just what the screeners do and don't see.Backscatter: Controversial New…

  • Re-Post: Tattoos I Know - The Grim Reaper

    6 Nov 2009 | 2:38 am
Today is a sad anniversary for us here on Tattoosday, for it marks one year since our friend, Tom Wacker, passed away unexpectedly.Tom was an early supporter of the blog, from its fledgling days as a once-a-week feature over on BillyBlog, and he watched us grow with a mixture of excitement and pride. The camera I use was a birthday gift from Tom and his fiancee Sephora, and he was always first in line to see the pictures I took whenever I had new material for the blog.A week or two before his death, Tom was hanging out at a friend's house in New Jersey. He took pictures of his friend's sleeve…
  • eL's Musical tattoo

    5 Nov 2009 | 2:35 am
Last month, much to my surprise, our old friend Paul (see his most recent work here) told me there was a tattoo shop nearby.I was surprised, to say the least. "New?" I asked him. "Been open over a year," he replied.I was puzzled. How had I missed a tattoo shop within walking distance of work? Was I blind? Not quite. I was just too busy looking around me, and not looking up.Because Fort Apache Tattoo Studio is just a stone's throw away from my regular inkspotting stomping ground, at West 31st Street near the corner of 8th Avenue. How I missed it was the fact that it peers out over the southwest…
  • Danny's Incredible Tattoos

    4 Nov 2009 | 2:33 am
On occasion, I will wander from 7th Avenue to 8th Avenue, through the campus of F.I.T., hoping to spot some creative work. One of my first posts (documented here) featured tattoos from someone I met on that stretch of street.Last month, I ran into Danny, who had several very nice tattoos.First I took a picture of this hannya mask on his right forearm:Then I snapped this photo of the tattoo above his right wrist:This metal-plated heart represents Danny's emotional toughness, with a trace of sensitivity. In his words, "even if my heart is dead, it will still bleed".I also took a photo of…
  • Eddie Graces Egghead's Shoulder

    3 Nov 2009 | 2:48 am
I recently met a gentleman from England, along with his wife, as they were milling about outside of Madison Square Garden. He referred to himself as "Egghead," I'm guessing due to his bald head. I first noticed the logo for the band Slayer on the back of his calf, along with several other interesting looking tattoos. He estimated he has about a dozen tattoos. But, like the best Tattoosday stories, he shared this amazing tattoo on his right shoulder, hidden under a sweatshirt, which he pulled off so I could see it properly:That's a phenomenal piece, courtesy of his artist Ben Boston at The…
  • Scott's Heart is Testament to Love and Hate

    2 Nov 2009 | 2:47 am
I met Scott last month as he was walking down 7th Avenue just south of 30th Street. His only tattoo just jumped out from his right forearm:He referred to this as a "time of my life" tattoo and it was "inspired by a horrible girlfriend".It's also another example of someone wearing their heart on their sleeve. He worked with the tattoo artist, Adam Rosenthal at the Th'ink Tank Tattoo in Denver to come up with a design that melded a biological heart with a Valentine's heart. The heart is stitched together with a needle and thread. The thread spells out the words "love" and "hate," which exemplified…

  • Geeks Who Are Into Video Games Are Also Into Tattoos.

    MJones
    4 Nov 2009 | 10:07 am
Today while I was hanging around my apartment, playing some Playstation, it suddenly hit me: in the past few years, we’ve seen tattoos turn up in everything from dinnerware to fashion, to television programs, to literally practically everything else in between.  Hell, don’t say I didn’t warn you when the day comes that tattoo artists are designing condoms.  Tattoo is everywhere and this has never been more obvious than it currently is. However, I still think that there is one market out there that tattoo has yet to infiltrate: video games.  To my knowledge, no video game…
  • Coverin’ Up in Japan II

    MJones
    4 Nov 2009 | 10:07 am
Just when it’s beginning to look like tattoos are slowly gaining more mainstream acceptance in Japan, things end up going in the opposite direction.  In this case, the opposite direction happens to be a zero tolerance policy toward tattoos. Japan has just played host to the 2009 Bledisloe Cup, a rugby tournament which, as near as I can tell is only played between two teams.  I’m sorry, but at this time if it isn’t glaringly obvious that I know nothing about rugby, then I confessing that as far as this famous match between New Zealand (The All Blacks) and Australia (The…

    4 Nov 2009 | 10:07 am
If my last article isn’t enough to warn anyone off of getting a tattoo done by a scratcher, maybe I can convince you with this one…and possibly save you the experience of a piss poor job, or even your life…if I can. Even in a state where tattooing is regulated one can find that bastion of ill health and greed known to the licensed professional world as “The Scratcher.” More often than not this resident of the slime ball environment will be delusional, egotistic, and not give a crap about anything, or person, other than themselves and their wallet. They will also tend to be the…
  • Meet Keone Nunes!

    MJones
    2 Nov 2009 | 3:14 pm
To some, tattoo art transcends images, coloured ink and tattoo studios.  For artists like Keone Nunes, tattoo is a method in which he can forever link himself to his culture and heritage. Growing up in Wai’anae, Hawaii, Nunes now lives and tattoos in West O’ahu.  There are no books filled with tattoo designs in Nunes’ tattoo room, just as there is no tattoo studio where he does his work.  He has no website, no contract to have his own reality TV tattoo show.  He knows 175 various motifs in the Hawaiian tattooing tradition, which are mostly based in the genealogy.  He…
  • Watertown, Minnesota Bans Tattoo Studios for a Year!

    Dr. Hook
    2 Nov 2009 | 3:14 pm
Now under normal circum stances such a headline would be cause for me to go off like a Fourth of July rocket tossed into a bonfire…But not this time. This time it is actually a cause for a well-deserved pat on the back to one of the smartest group of politicians I’ve seen to date. Minnesota is one of the few states that has zero tattooing regulations, and if you’ve been following Tattoo Blog for any length of time, myself, my partner in crime, Mjones, and several others here will be happy to tell you such states tend to be disasters looking for a place to happen. The number of scratcher…
